The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has partnered with graduate students from the WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University to study variables that contribute to ozone formation. The Phoenix Ozone Variable Importance Analysis project applies new technology and methods analysis to ADEQ’s ozone data. Graduate students are using machine learning from Amazon’s SageMaker to better understand ozone formation in Phoenix. During the ECOS Spring Meeting last week, ADEQ Director Misael Cabrera noted that the state’s goals for the project are to identify what may lead to lower ozone concentrations in order to avoid nonattainment.
