Last week, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed a bill banning polystyrene food containers from all vendors by 2025. Northam signed House Bill 533, along with an executive order banning this May the distribution of many types of single-use plastic items (exclusive of health and safety-related items) by state universities and executive agencies.
Virginia is the sixth state, and the first southern state, to ban the containers. In a statement, Northam commented that, “As a large producer of solid waste, the Commonwealth must lead by example and transition away from single-use disposable plastics to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for all Virginians.”
