The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has determined that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds meet the state definition of hazardous substance in Washington’s environmental cleanup law. As of October 2021, the Washington Department of Health is creating State Action Levels for five PFAS compounds in drinking water.
Once the health department completes its work, Ecology will create cleanup levels to set standards for contaminated site cleanups.
Until there are enforceable federal standards for PFAS, ECOS members can look to other states like Washington for guidance and perspective.
