The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy (EGLE) has leveraged GIS to deploy a user-friendly portal to facilitate the Michigan Green Schools program. The initiative empowers schools to operate more sustainably by achieving different “levels” based on the number of sustainable activities they undertake.
These activities include everything from composting to transitioning to more energy-efficient facilities operations. The activities fall under four categories: reduce/reuse/recycle, energy, environmental protection, and miscellaneous.
Previously, the program struggled to keep up with changes in individual school coordinators, track school progress, and measure the success of the program across the state. This new portal now allows EGLE to more easily manage the entire program – from application, to training, to tracking and sharing success.
