Last week, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality’s Air Quality Division (AQD) received the Best Practice Award from the Association of Air Pollution Control Agencies (AAPCA). AAPCA’s annual Best Practices in Air Pollution Control program showcases groundbreaking technology, innovative practices, and exemplary operations in the field of air pollution control.
Responding to elevated ozone levels in the Upper Green River Basin, the AQD began researching potential emissions sources. Disposal ponds from commercial oil waste disposal facilities were identified as a potential source, but monitoring ponds or surface areas is more complicated than monitoring a traditional stack. After several years of study and air and water sampling at multiple facilities, the AQD developed a model to fit Wyoming’s specific needs.
