A Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) webinar last week highlighted four flood resiliency projects completed by river conservancies, a regional planning commission, and a local housing partnership. These projects demonstrate how organizations can improve water quality and flood resiliency simultaneously. With funding from a variety of sources including Vermont’s Flood Resilience Communities Fund, DEC’s Ecosystem Restoration Grant Program, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, these projects restored floodplains, created new flood mitigation areas, and removed dams.
The webinar was part of DEC’s ongoing Clean Water Conversation Series that features monthly discussions of clean water-related topics. For 2024, in response to extreme flooding in 2023, the series is focused on the intersection of clean water, climate change, and flood resiliency. All previous webinars can be viewed on DEC’s Clean Water Initiative YouTube channel.
