On July 31, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) unveiled 16 new electric vehicle (EV) charging ports, the first of more than 600 Level 2 alternating current and 2000 direct current fast charging stations to be implemented under the agency’s Driving a Cleaner Illinois program.
Funded in part by the Illinois Climate & Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), the program will award $82.6M in grants for the purpose of expanding Illinois’s EV infrastructure. The new ports, located across four public gas stations, are expected to help address gaps in the state’s growing EV charging network. Forthcoming ports will be located across other public sites, including hotels and shopping centers, and will ensure EVs remain a choice for motorists across Illinois, according to IEPA Interim Director James Jennings.
