This week, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) released a request for applications (RFA) for a $3.7M funding opportunity to help curb nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions with clean transportation. The new Clean Truck, Bus, & Airport Equipment Program, funded by Montana’s allocation of the Volkswagen Clean Air Act Civil Settlement, will match funds to replace older diesel vehicles with battery electric, alternate fuel, or newer diesel models. Public and private entities are both eligible to apply.
MDEQ notes that nationally, the transportation sector is the main source of NOx emissions, contributing to smog and poor air quality. Projects will be scored according to their ability to achieve long-term air quality benefits for the greatest number of Montanans, invest in clean alternative fuels and infrastructure, and reduce diesel emission exposure of sensitive populations, among other criteria.
