The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has launched the Firefighting Substances Disposal Reimbursement program. This new initiative aims to reimburse individuals, businesses, and communities for disposing of firefighting substances known as Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) that contain PFAS, as well as contaminated equipment.
As there are no facilities that can safely dispose of AFFF within Alaska, program applicants are required to coordinate with an out-of-state facility for the disposal and transportation of these hazardous materials. Applicants share a cost estimate with DEC through an eligibility confirmation form. DEC then reimburses all approved expenses through direct payment.
While applicants can contract with any disposal facility and transportation provider, DEC has assembled a list of interested vendors, available here.
