More than 10 tons of marine debris have been removed since South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) implemented its Adopt-A-Beach program in 2010. The program, part of the DHEC’s Marine Debris Initiative, engages community members and businesses to rid beaches and coastal waterways of litter.
A “MyCoast” smartphone app has been developed to enable individuals or groups interested in coordinating beach adoption and cleanup schedules to partner with the program and further state coastal preservation.
