Last week, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law the state’s ambitious climate legislation. The measure requires the state to cut emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, a 10-year delay from the state’s previous 2020 commitment. California, a long-time leader in state climate action, intends to meet its new extended timeline with deeper emission cuts.
Although specific programs have not yet been identified, Brown cited the signing as “farsighted” and “far-reaching,” and acknowledged that the new emissions targets will likely impact many of the state’s economic sectors, renewable energy mandates, and cap-and-trade program resurgence initiatives. He maintains, however, that these changes are necessary to broaden collaborative efforts among sub national leaders and to limit the overall effects of climate change.
