Almost a year following the effective date of the federal rule for the management of coal ash generated by power plants, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) approved new state rules for handling coal ash.
The new Georgia EPD rules, approved October 26, are considered more stringent than the federal requirements, as they apply to a broader set of coal ash storage and disposal sites, require landfills that accept coal ash to submit a coal ash management plan and test groundwater for coal ash contaminants, and mandate that all coal ash storage and disposal sites to be permitted by EPD.
