This week, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management co-presented the first-ever Rhode Island Food System Summit, an event designed to inform government, businesses, and community partners about the state’s commitment to regional, sustainable foods. The one-day event featured workshops that spotlighted the system’s core components: production (i.e. farming or fisheries), health and access, and economic development.
Many Rhode Island families are supported by the region’s growing demand for fresh, locally grown foods. A leader of state food plan development, Rhode Island strives to enhance economic and social potential in the food system, and has developed a five-year action strategy that will alleviate food insecurity, make food production more accessible, expand product markets, prioritize environmental and economic sustainability, and create and sustain food-related businesses.
