The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality funds and supervises the development of the Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS). Since 2006, MEECS has provided students in grades 3 through 9 with opportunities to learn more about their environment through inquiry-oriented, data-based lessons in Science and Social Studies. MEECS recently published a new edition of its Energy Resources unit, as well as online support modules including videos.
All MEECS units feature engaging, hands-on lessons that encourage student participation and inquiry. Designed to increase appreciation and understanding of Michigan’s environment and its role in Michigan’s economy, the units include Air Quality, Climate Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Energy Resources, Land Use, Land and Environment, and Water Quality. Units have been field tested by 120 teachers in nearly 200 Michigan classrooms, and more than 5,000 Michigan educators have been trained in one or more of them.
