This month, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) posted a video highlighting a new recycling process at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Buffalo, WV. The process takes fine metal particles created during the machining and polishing of engine components and compresses it into a steel puck which is then recycled into new steel. Prior to this new process, the waste product of the particle processing, a metal paste that made up 50 percent of solid waste in the state, was disposed of in landfills.
This is one example of Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s commitment to the environment, which has been recognized through various DEP awards. Toyota joined with DEP and U.S. EPA in the Sustainability Partnership in 2009 and adheres to its corporate Enhanced Environmental Management System, which includes maintaining zero-landfill since 2003 and partnering in various recycling programs.
