Delaware is working to streamline government services by using open data to break down silos between state agencies and the general public. The state has developed an open data portal as a central repository for data from state agencies and offices in order to streamline government operations and provide a better customer experience for the public users.
Users are able to browse through data on state services including economic development, education, health and human services, public safety, and licenses and certifications.
Delaware Chief Information Officer James Collins offers a few tips for agencies looking to centralizing their government services as well:
- Be sure to include leadership when discussing the possibility of centralization. Having their support is not only essential, but helpful when establishing buy-in within an agency.
- Define the “end state.” Conduct an analysis of your agency’s current systems for data sharing and collaborating and create a plan for where you want to end up.
- Incorporate security measures appropriate for state agency users and the public as needed for the type of data and type of use.
Ultimately, Collins envisions the state using centralized and open data to be more proactive in providing citizen services through a portal for businesses and citizens alike.
