On May 5, The Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced more than half million dollars in solid waste grants to municipalities and school districts across the state. Green Schools grants ranging from $300 to $4,500 will fund a variety of projects, from purchasing recycling bins to cafeteria waste composting programs to field trips to community recycling centers. The grant program is funded by a $1 per ton state landfill fee. More information on Kansas Green Schools is available here.
Waste tire recycling grants help partially fund playground surfacing, tracks, and picnic tables and benches made from waste tires. The waste tire grants are funded by a $0.25 tax on new tires.
