Kansas Collects Nearly 400 Tons of Waste Tires for Recycling

This week, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced that it had collected 394.36 tons of waste tires for recycling in a series of tire amnesty events held across the state. In addition to being an eyesore, waste tires can collect rain water where mosquitos can breed. The KDHE Bureau of Waste Management partnered with the Center for Disease Control to help combat mosquitos through grants to counties to hold these events. The eight counties across the state that were selected for the program were known to have the species of mosquito that carry the Zika virus. There are now nearly 50,000 less tires in the state to be breeding grounds for these and other mosquitos.
