The Washington Department of Ecology announced this week the recipients of 25 equipment cache grants and four Coastal Protection Fund grants aimed to help local communities respond to and restore the environment following oil spills or hazardous material emergencies. The equipment grants, totaling $2.8 million, specifically provide tools to tribes, local fire departments and public enterprises that will enable them to act faster when an oil or hazardous spill occurs. The Coastal Protection Fund grants, totaling $80,000, were awarded to specific environmental restoration projects, and are funded by natural resource damage assessments paid by the companies or individuals responsible for the spills.
