Voluntary Smoke Management Guidelines are helping Arkansas farmers to manage smoke during post-harvest stubble removal. Prescribed fires are useful and efficient when it comes to removing stubble from row crops, but it is important to take into account weather conditions including humidity and wind, information about other burns in the area, and the proximity of nearby smoke-sensitive areas like schools, nursing homes, and highways.
The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and other stakeholders worked together last year to develop the crop burning guidelines to avoid the creation of hazardous conditions in smoke-sensitive areas.The guidelines are based on earlier guidance created by the Arkansas Prescribed Fire Council for forest and land management.
