The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Drug Take-Back Program seeks to provide more convenient opportunities for citizens to properly dispose of unwanted medications, as pills that are flushed or trashed harm the environment.

This project was initiated during dialogue between DEQ, the Product Stewardship Institute, local government, private sector, and other stakeholders to advance pharmaceuticals and sharps stewardship.

The project’s pilot stage was conducted during 2017, but most of the participants have since continued the program at their own expense.
What are the Results to Date?
DEQ and the Product Stewardship Institute conducted a pilot stage with 5 pharmacies who installed collection kiosks for their customers. Most of the pharmacies have since continued the collection efforts.
What are the Resources Needed, including Time, Cost, Etc.?
Primary project costs include installing the receptacle at the pharmacy and disposing medications via reverse distribution. Other costs include promotion and project management time.

This project was extremely popular with the public and received wide press coverage.
