The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality is teaming with the Bureau of Land Management, the Wyoming Department of Corrections, The Nature Conservancy, the Institute of Applied Ecology, and a local middle school to help restore the sagebrush ecosystem in Wyoming.
The sagebrush steppe once ranged from the Dakotas to the west coast, but today much of that ecosystem has been reduced by factors such as development, forest fires, and the spread of invasive species. Now, it is half the size if used to be. The Abandoned Mine Lands Native Plants Project includes outreach and education on the importance of sagebrush, a seed lab to develop tougher plants, and groups of students and volunteers to help with planting.
