This week, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. EPA announced a settlement agreement resolving the state’s legal claims associated with the Gold King Mine release, which occurred on August 5, 2015 in southwest Colorado.
Utah will dismiss its legal claims against EPA, and EPA will strengthen Utah’s involvement with the agency’s work to address contamination at the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund Site, which includes the Gold King Mine and other abandoned mines.
The parties hope this resolution will strengthen partnerships and advance environmental protection in the state.
