This week, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) awarded grants totaling $2.5M to 18 cities, counties, agencies, and nonprofits to support and increase recycling in the state.
A $164,500 grant to the Alabama Recycling Coalition will be used to support recycling education throughout the state, including by building a recycling website and by creating and implementing a multimedia awareness campaign.
ADEM receives funding for the grant program from a fee on solid waste disposed of in state landfills. The fee was set by the state legislature in 2008 through the Solid Waste & Recyclable Materials Management Act.
