In late June, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) announced grants of more than $1.4 million to 16 local governments across the state. The grants will be used to purchase equipment and to encourage recycling with educational and promotional materials.
The grants are supported by a portion of a $1-per-ton fee on solid waste disposed of in Alabama landfills. This fee and the Alabama Recycling Fund that supports these grants were created by the Alabama Legislature’s 2008 Solid Wastes & Recyclable Materials Management Act.
According to ADEM Land Division Chief Stephen Cobb, “The grants will re-energize stale recycling programs, further enhance other flourishing recycling programs, and support education and outreach activities to promote the importance of recycling throughout the respective communities.”
