The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has launched a new High Pollution Watch (HPW) air quality alert system to provide advance notice in select areas in Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma and Nogales forecast areas of potential poor air quality conditions.
The system provides early notice of potential poor air quality conditions based on U.S. EPA’s Air Quality Index if a forecasted pollutant might exceed 100 AQI, the federal health standard. HPW will be used when the ADEQ air quality meteorologist determines the potential to exceed the federal air quality health standard. The state may also upgrade the watch to a High Pollution Advisory when exceedance of the federal health standard for a forecasted pollutant is imminent or a high probability.
