On April 27, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey wrote Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin urging the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to identify and treat water in known PFAS contaminated areas around four DOD installations located in two of the most populous metropolitan areas in Arizona.
Specifically, Arizona seeks five remedial actions to address DOD-related PFAS contamination of groundwater, including: 1) the sharing of PFAS data related to installations in the state to help determine the extent of PFAS impacts; 2) the development of a preliminary conceptual site model for each DOD facility based on available groundwater, geological, and facility data; 3) an estimate of a preliminary timeframe for when DOD-related PFAS plumes may reach public drinking water systems; 4) accelerated remedial investigations with the primary purpose of designing early response actions to prevent PFAS plumes; and 5) the design and installation of early response actions to protect public drinking water systems at risk from DOD-related PFAS.
The letter notes work underway at the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to contain the spread of PFAS near specified DOD installations.
