This week, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that it estimates 323 nesting pairs of bald eagles in the state. This is the highest reported number since DEC began a restoration program in 1976 after bald eagles were nearly eliminated, mostly due to the pesticide DDT.
The comeback is attributed to combined efforts to bring back eagles through a breeding program and habitat improvements.
