Last week, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) announced the success of a pilot program to collect and recycle pressurized gas cylinders. During the summer of 2023, CT DEEP oversaw an industry program to collect and recycle nearly 2,000 one-pound propane camping cylinders at Hammonasset Beach State Park Campground. The collection bins for the pilot program had less than 1% contamination from unwanted materials and all the cylinders collected were recycled.
The program is set to expand to an additional state park in 2024. In 2025, the Cylinder Collective, a coalition of residential gas cylinder producers, will implement the recycling program statewide.
This recycling has been driven by Connecticut Public Act No. 22-27, an extended producer responsibility law passed in 2022, that requires an industry-managed stewardship recycling program for certain residential gas cylinders.
