As District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser moved to close non-essential businesses in response to COVID-19, the DC Department of Energy & Environment assured beekeepers in the nation’s capital that they are considered essential workers in rehoming bee swarms.
The DC Beekeepers Alliance “Swarm Squad” responded to just 12 calls last year, but this year, more than 60 calls have come in asking that the squad assist with a swarm. Bees can become a problem when a swarm takes up residence in a home or business, so it is important for beekeepers to be able to respond quickly to calls, even in this time of social distancing.
