Last week, the District of Columbia launched a new website called Zero Waste DC. The site provides residents, businesses, district staff, and schools with information on effective strategies and programs to convert waste to resources, improve human and environmental health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create an inclusive economic opportunity, and conserve natural resources. The effort requires collaboration among many parties through the Interagency Waste Reduction Working Group that is comprised of the DC Department of Energy and Environment, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Public Works, and Department of General Services. The Working Group is charged with leading the effort by implementing waste programs, developing education and outreach materials, and supporting the continued evolution of DC’s waste diversion policies. The district hopes to achieve 80 percent or more diversion of waste generated by the city.
