This week, the DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) honored the 7 recipients of the 2019 District Sustainability Awards, highlighting work by individuals and organizations that make the nation’s capital more sustainable. Much of the work done by awardees is reinforced by recent initiatives taken up by DC, including a plastic straw ban, the ongoing Anacostia river cleanup, and the recently signed clean energy bill.
During his opening remarks, DOEE Director Tommy Wells praised not just the award winners but also the vendors that helped sponsor the event, including sustainable caterers who use compostable dishware, food diverted from a landfill, and beer brewed using solar power. Wells praised DC’s aggressive action on sustainability and is optimistic that the city will reach its climate goals.
