Although winter’s chill is overtaking many parts of the nation, ECOS members are already looking to summer and beginning to promote spring and summer camps, clinics, and programs directed toward youth to promote their understanding of wildlife and environmental health and safety. For example, New York State DEC is offering environmental education summer camps. Iowa’s DNR offers outdoor classes to refine wilderness skills such as hunting and fishing. Wisconsin DNR sponsors environmental education clinics and programs. Missouri’s Department of Conservation lists daily events at each of its nature centers, with many of the programs directed at engaging families or children, in addition to also offering conservation day camps in the summer. All of these initiatives provide young people an opportunity to acquire useful skills and knowledge and appreciation of natural resources.
