In celebration of Protect Your Groundwater Day on September 6, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) shared ways that citizens can protect and conserve groundwater resources. In the state of Indiana, almost 70% of residents rely on groundwater for their drinking water supplies. Additionally, more than half a million residents use individual household water wells, and another 2.4 million individuals rely on public water supplies that draw all or part of their supplies from groundwater.
IDEM shared tips for protecting this crucial resource, which included: ensuring abandoned wells are plugged, properly disposing of household chemicals and harsh cleaners, and inspecting septic tanks regularly.
