The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has established a Tiger Team of expert DEQ personnel to clean up an abandoned waste tire processing facility. The 74-acre site, abandoned since 2017, houses an estimated 123,000 tons of waste tires in various forms including a mountain of 50,000 to 100,000 unprocessed used tires. The Tiger Team is working with local officials to identify and agree upon necessary mitigation steps, secure funding, and supervise the cleanup project.
This cleanup at the Cottonport Monofill site is part of an initiative by DEQ Secretary Aurelia Giacometto to address longstanding environmental concerns associated with abandoned or unresolved hazardous facilities that she has named Legacy Projects. Each of these projects will have its own Tiger Team to lead efforts to remediate the sites.
