The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has introduced the Maine Enterprise Licensing System (MELS), an online system designed to expedite workflows and provide transparency to regulated entities and the public. MELS replaces former licensing, compliance, and inspection systems.
As of this week, new permit applications in the Land Program must be submitted electronically through the system. In addition to its permitting functions, MELS allows the public to submit environmental complaints and navigate a map to find permittees and learn more about their permits.
Other DEP regulatory programs will be transitioned to the new system over the next several years.
