The Maine Department of Environmental Protection this week announced that it will require PFAS testing of all sludge material licensed for land application. Spreading sludge as a soil abatement has been common practice long before it was known that it contained PFAS. Under the new requirement, producers must prove that all sludge is below regulatory levels before it can be applied in the state.
Earlier this month, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed an executive order creating a Governor’s Task Force to mobilize state agencies and other stakeholders to review the prevalence of PFAS in Maine and address it.
