Maryland Governor Larry Hogan this week unveiled his plans on clean energy for the 2020 legislative session. The Clean and Renewable Energy Standard (CARES), which aims to set the state on a path to one hundred percent clean energy by 2040, will expand the eligibility of credits for clean energy resources and eliminate the eligibility of these credits and subsidies for burning trash to generate electricity or “black liquor,” a byproduct of making paper.
CARES is a key component of Maryland’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal and includes other key elements to embracing the state’s clean and renewable energy resources.
