The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy (EGLE) has entered into an informal agreement with U.S. EPA to resolve a Title VI Civil Rights Act complaint filed by a coalition of community groups in Flint, Michigan in late 2021. The complaint was related to a Clean Air Act permit issued to the Ajax Asphalt plant in Genesee Township on Flint’s border.
In a statement issued on August 10, EGLE indicates that the agreement is not a finding by EPA or admission by EGLE of noncompliance with Title VI. The department expresses confidence that its program fully complies with Title VI and the protection of civil rights and emphasizes its ongoing commitment to environmental justice.
The agreement includes provisions on enhanced community engagement with local residents, increased air monitoring capabilities in the community, and funding for a community-led public health assessment.
