Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy (EGLE) is paving the way to a more sustainable market for scrap tires in the state. EGLE recently has backed a number of paving projects that expand the state’s use of scrap tires in road resurfacing. Due to the agency’s efforts, no major scrap tire processing businesses in the state are sending scrap materials to landfills.
Similar efforts have been underway for about two decades in Michigan, and EGLE has partnered with local universities to test whether the tires would respond well to hot weather in the summer and freezing temperatures in the winter.
