The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) recently recognized a local distillery as the first in the state to achieve national BetterBev sustainability status. BetterBev is a nationwide expansion of New Hampshire’s Sustainable Craft Beverage Program. The effort spotlights manufacturers that improve energy efficiency, conserve water, minimize waste, and address wastewater issues. Program participants receive free technical assistance including suggested best management practices.
The DES Pollution Prevention Program has worked with other states and U.S. EPA Region 1 to provide a variety of resources on its Sustainable Craft Beverage webpage, including case studies, pollution prevention strategies, fact sheets, and even a webinar series.
With the BetterBev program now taking this work nationally, there is yet another opportunity for other states to encourage sustainability efforts by their craft beverage producers.
