Spurred by community feedback from listening sessions hosted in environmental justice communities, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched a new initiative to support municipalities in combating illegal dumping. The Collaboration and Deterrence Project will provide local communities with tools, training, and support to deter illegal dumpers and hold them accountable.
Participating towns will receive loaned camera systems and other deterrence equipment. The DEP will also offer local governments training on implementing an illegal dumping program and strategies for curbing illegal dumping. Through a partnership with the Attorney General’s Office, communities can also receive training and guidance on pathways for both civil and criminal enforcement of dumping laws.
