The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has released a draft feasibility study for the Strategic Water Supply (SWS), an initiative designed to protect New Mexico’s freshwater supply in the face of water scarcity challenges. The study provides detail on the technical and economic aspects of the SWS, which aims to support the nation’s transition to renewable energy and advanced manufacturing by providing water-intensive processes an alternative to consuming the state’s limited freshwater supplies. Such industries include green hydrogen, electric vehicle and battery manufacturing, critical minerals, microchips, solar panels, and wind turbines.
NMED is seeking feedback from subject matter experts to ensure the thoroughness of the feasibility study, which can be downloaded from the NMED website. To provide feedback by October 18, follow the instructions on the same webpage.
