The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has developed a feature article and storyboard to vividly portray the success of its recent partnership to clean up the site of a waste tire dumping ground. Working with the Texas General Land Office and U.S. EPA, TCEQ managed to restore a 40-acre piece of pastureland known as the Gatesville tire site that had served for 17 years as a dumping ground for a staggering 268,000 tires.
In late 2019, TCEQ personnel performed a final closure inspection and determined that the site had, indeed, been properly remediated. Overall, TCEQ investigators conducted a total of 10 site inspections throughout the span of the cleanup to monitor its progress. More than $1.5 million in state funding supported the comprehensive cleanup efforts and improvements to site infrastructure.
