Through a grant from U.S. EPA, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is investigating coal dust air quality in two Tidewater communities following more than a century of coal transport and shipping in the area.
The funding will allow the DEQ to add site-specific air toxics monitors in the area, host several engagement events to collect input from the public, and collaborate with the state’s Department of Health to evaluate the data, conduct health risk assessments, and provide information regarding potential health concerns. These activities will inform future programs to address air quality impacts associated with coal dust.
