On April 1, the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) launched its Use Food Well campaign, part of an effort to halve Washington food waste by 2030. Each year, Washington generates one million tons of food waste, and reducing that number can increase food security, reduce climate impacts, and help Washington residents save money. The campaign includes resources to help Washingtonians plan meals, shop smart, and store food properly.
Ecology has partnered with Safeway and Albertsons stores across Washington to promote the campaign, and also with sustainable chef Joel Gamoran, host of the new PBS show Homemade Live, to share innovative recipes that reduce food waste.
The campaign began in conjunction with the start of National Food Waste Prevention Week, celebrated this year on April 1-7.
