In a win for the state, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) last month signed a letter of termination for Western Nuclear Inc.’s Split Rock Uranium license. Wyoming has held regulatory authority from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an Agreement State since 2018. The transfer is the final step in a detailed regulatory process to ensure all the required environmental safeguards are kept in place. Split Rock is the first Title II milling site in Wyoming that has completed the rigorous steps to terminate an operating license since Wyoming became an Agreement State.
The long-term care and maintenance of the site will now be overseen by the U.S. Department of Energy. For more information, see here.
