The Iowa Waste Exchange (IWE) is a materials exchange program designed to keep waste out of the landfills and in production. The IWE maintains a database of available and wanted materials with over 13,000 materials listed.

The program began as a pilot project at Indian Hills Community College in 1990 and was official established by the Iowa State Legislature in 1991 to divert waste materials from the state’s sanitary landfills.

What are the Results to Date?
Since 1990, through FY 2023, the IWE has matched well over 4 million tons, keeping waste out of landfills and into our economy, saving Iowans nearly $135 million by diverting this waste into production and use. Through FY 2023, the IWE has served over 76,000 Iowa clients.
