This MassDEP initiative helps users identify what materials they can recycle. Along with a recyclopedia, the program has a Beyond the Bin search tool that helps users find out how and where to donate or recycle items that can’t go in their home recycling bin.
How was the Project Started?
Mixed messages about recycling were causing enough confusion to disrupt the recycling system. Thus, MassDEP brought all the material recovery facility (MRF) operators in Massachusetts together in one room to produce a list of acceptable materials that was built by consensus and based on three key criteria:
- The material should not harm the workers or equipment.
- The MRF equipment must be able to handle the material.
- There must be a consistent market for the material.
